Generation 'Y' More Likely to View Shows on TV Program Web Sites; Also Gives Greater Consideration to Episode Sponsors.

Annual Knowledge Networks How People Use(R) study details connections between TV versus Internet viewing of shows

MENLO PARK, Calif., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- A new How People Use(R) (HPU) study from Knowledge Networks shows marked generational differences in approaches to TV program Web sites, with younger viewers more likely to watch complete episodes -- and to give greater purchase consideration to brands that sponsor Web viewing of those shows.

Now in its second year, How People Use(R) TV's Web Connections provides an in-depth look at the Internet viewing habits and opinions of Generation "Y" (ages 13-28), Generation "X" (ages 29-42) and early Baby Boomers (ages 43-54), showing that:

-- Generation Y (33%) and Generation X (27%) led early Baby Boomers (19%) in use of official TV program web sites. -- Gen Y (62%) users are much more likely to have watched a full episode on the program site than Gen X (41%) or younger Boomers (32%).

The study -- which utilized a trademarked Knowledge Networks methodology for understanding how consumers integrate media into their everyday lives -- also examines how these users' Internet viewing habits may influence their consideration of marketing and advertising associated with TV programs viewed on the Web:

-- All generations indicated that sponsorship of an entire episode on the program's web site would increase their consideration of the sponsoring brand (Gen Y, 60%; Gen X, 50%; early Boomers, 44%). -- Early Boomers (42%) are more likely than Gen Y (29%) and Gen X (32%) to watch advertisements or commercials played during or before their viewing of streaming video on these sites.

"The level of satisfaction among all users of network Web assets is very positive news," said David Tice, Vice President & Group Account Director, Media Team, at Knowledge Networks/SRI and Director of The Home Technology Monitor(TM). "Equally encouraging is that younger persons, ages 13 to 34, are the highest proportion of users of these assets -- the same Gen X and Gen Y users whom networks were concerned about losing to new digital options."

Based on a survey of 2,209 Internet users, How People Use(R) TV's Web Connections 2008 also quantifies

-- attitudes toward advertising in streamed and downloaded programs -- fast-forwarding through ads -- features and content most used on network and program web sites -- time of day and location of use -- types of consumer technology associated with viewing -- local station web site use

How People Use(R) TV's Web Connections 2008 is part of the ongoing service The Home Technology Monitor(TM), the definitive source of reliable insights into consumers' ownership, use, and response to media-related technologies, from broadband to DVRs to wireless Internet access. The program builds on nearly three decades of research, combining top-quality nationwide surveys of technology ownership with special reports on key devices and services. These special reports are usually based on the How People Use(R) methodology.

AOL update underscores family focus.

Byline: James Coates

By virtue of longevity alone, America Online is the gold standard among Internet service providers, and the latest upgrade from version 7.0 to 8.0 of the core software underscores why AOL rules the family Internet space.

Organized around the American household from the start, AOL's 8.0 software upgrade focuses heavily on helping parents control the way their children venture into the sometimes-dangerous universe known as the Internet.

The Keyword (press Control+K) Parental Controls calls up the new beefed-up AOL Guardian feature that lets parents do things like establish which Web sites a child may or may not visit and crack down on e-mail.

For children (and adults) deemed ready for the world of instant messaging, the new software offers a snazzy collection of animated buddy icons, buddy sounds and exotic backgrounds.

The new interface adopts a three-dimensional pale blue design that reminds one of the Aqua interface used by Macintosh OS X, and users will either love or hate the large number of controls that stay affixed to the top and sides of the screen.

Users get to customize the start-up display to emphasize things such as headlines and stock news for adults, or entertainments such as music, games and homework help for youngsters.

In e-mail, AOL executives remain resolute in their decision not to use the far better POP or WebMail standards common elsewhere. But AOL's e-mail does get a major face lift.

A potent filtering feature lets you display only e-mail that comes from people you know or to set it for all notes from strangers or all bulk mail.

A small but superb addition is a feature that lets one set up the display so new messages either get displayed first or last depending upon preference. This also lets one sort by the sender's address or by the subject line. These features finally make e-mail on AOL display some of the features POP users have taken for granted for years now.

Enrique's bailing out on Britney; SHOWBIZ.(News)

Byline: LEANNE SMYTH

SPANISH heartthrob Enrique Iglesias has bailed on Britney's tour because he couldn't cope with being an opening act.

The 35-year-old star has dropped out of the upcoming Spears concerts because his ego couldn't handle being overshadowed by her, it has been revealed.

A source yesterday said: "Britney's and Enrique's lawyers and agents were hammering out an agreement for weeks, and the terms were finessed to make Enrique appear to be a co-headliner.

"We're told both sides agreed to the deal.

"But just hours before Britney's team went public, Enrique was burning up the phone lines and the internet.

"He was engaging various people connected with the tour in lengthy conversations in which he made it clear he was, in reality, Britney's opening act and he wanted out."

Consumer Connected Device Shipments Set to Reach 712 Million Units, According to Infinite Research.

DECATUR, Ga. -- Infinite Research is pleased to announce the publication of our Global Consumer Connected Device Market Forecast. The report presents a comprehensive analysis of the Consumer Connected Device market, including coverage of mobile connected devices and stationary home electronics. Both device categories are set to see rapid adoption over the next 5 years, with total shipments of consumer connected devices growing exponentially.

Overall shipments of consumer connected devices will increase from 262.1 million units in 2010 to 712.1 million units in 2015. Shipment growth is being driven by product manufacturers who are increasingly incorporating cellular and/or Wi-Fi connectivity into their devices. This trend will cause the global installed base of Consumer Connected Devices to swell to 2.1 billion units in 2015.

Virtually all mobile devices, including e-readers, tablet computers, portable games consoles, media players, digital cameras, and camcorders, are now being embedded with internet connectivity. The same is true for stationary consumer electronics devices; smart-TVs, connected Set-Top Boxes, video game consoles, Blu-Ray / DVD players, digital photo frames, and media phones are all being equipped with internet connectivity.

"The explosion of connected devices is being driven by consumers seeking on-demand access to movies, music, social networking services, applications (apps), connected services, and other content. Additionally, wireless modules have hit price points that encourage device manufacturers to add internet connectivity to their products. This fact, in combination with falling device prices and fundamental demand, is driving consumer adoption of mobile connected devices and connected home electronics," said Mark Ritorto, President, Infinite Research.

Infinite Research's Consumer Connected Device Report provides detailed shipment, installed base, hardware revenue, and network revenue forecasts for all the device categories listed above, as well as further segmenting the data by region, technology type, and market classification. The report also provides in-depth coverage of the key trends, forces, developments, business models and success factors presently impacting the connected device space.

Infinite Research is a leading market research and strategic consulting firm focused on the machine-to-machine (M2M) and connected device markets.
