FED: Gillard mum on where schools money will go

Federal Education Minister JULIA GILLARD won't reveal which schools will get a promised
half a million dollars in extra funding.

Prime Minister KEVIN RUDD outlined the next step in the government's proposed education
revolution last week .. saying Labor will withhold funding from the states unless they
introduce league tables for schools.

Ms GILLARD's offered little more detail to Network Ten today .. saying negotiations are on-going.

She says the government wants to assist pockets of disadvantage in major cities and
in regional centres.

The minister's rejected accusations her chief influence in the league table plan ..

the New York education system .. has been a dismal failure.

A survey's found not one school in the city is in the top 200 schools in the US.

She says the scheme has made a difference to pockets of poverty and disadvantage.
