Fed: Broadcasting watchdog says violent TV rules could be tighte

The broadcasting watchdog says rules restricting graphic or violent television news
footage may be tightened after the Victorian government called for tougher standards.

The state government has agreed to refer a parliamentary committee report recommending
violent footage be banned from early evening news bulletins to the Australian Broadcasting
Authority.

The Herald Sun says the committee findings also recommend an examination of time slots
for movies showing sex and violence and that cinema age limits be policed more strictly.

ABA chairman DAVID FLINT says television stations already do a good job of developing
and applying industry codes on the screening of graphic footage, providing warnings that
it might offend or disturb viewers.

But he says there is room to tighten the rules.
