NSW: Two girls struck down in crossbow attack

A 16-year-old New South Wales student is fighting for her life after being shot throughthe chest with a crossbow bolt that then lodged in another girl's leg.

Police say up to 100 teenagers saw a student chase pupils around Tomaree High Schoolat Salamander Bay, near Port Stephens on the north coast, and shoot one girl through theleft side of her chest.

The bolt passed through her body before lodging in the leg of a second 16-year-old girl.

Both girls have been taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Police say they've taken a 16-year-old boy into custody after the 8.15am (AEST) shootingwhich was witnessed by up to 100 teenagers.

One police spokesman says the boy, a student at the school, knows the seriously injured girl.

Police say a number of students overpowered the boy and held him until police arrived.
